Cubism, But No Computers
It’s interesting that a cubist painter, dedicated to
experimentation and change, would feel that,
“Computers are useless. They can only give you
answers.” That was Pablo Ruiz y Picasso, who died on
April 8 in 1973. He believed that to repeat oneself (by
pursuing naturalism in art, as those who came before
him) was to contradict “the constant flight forward of
spirit.” His own flight forward
embraced abstract painting and
cubism, and he was also renowned
as a potter, designer, sculptor, and
graphic artist, working into his 90s.

garlic. Toss cheeses with
the flour. A half hour
before serving time, heat the
wine in a fondue pot or
heavy enamel pan. Do not
boil. When wine is hot,
gradually add the cheeses,
stirring constantly. Add
olive oil and garlic then the
kirsch, still stirring. Add
pepper to taste. Cook over
low heat for about 10 min
utes, then keep warm over a
candle or warming tray. Dip
bread cubes into cheese
with long-handled forks.
