Dekalb Granted Marker
DEKALB. HI. - Dekalb Gene
tics Corporation said it has
received a patent (#5,492,547)
from the U.S. Patent and Trade
mark Office covering prediction -
of yield in com using inherited
genetic markets.
Breeders can create a molecular
map or “fingerprint’’ of a com
plant using these methods, cone
late the marker information with
yield, and then predict the yield of
progeny plants that have inherited
these genetic markers.
The patent covets the use of any
market, including RFLPs (Restric
tion Fragment Length Polymorph
ism), RAPDs (Random AmpliGed
Polymorphic DNA), miscrosatel-
Utes and other polymerase chain
reaction-based markets.
“Based on tests conducted by
our researchers, we believe that
DNA markers are an exceptional
ly useful tool in developing super
ior inbred and hybrid com germ
plasm,” said Bruce P. Bickncr,
Dekalb’s chairman and chief
executive officer. “Using compu
ter analysis, breeders can predict
yield without actually growing the
plant Only the gcrmplasm with
the highest predicted yield are
then selected for evaluation in the
field. This tool significantly
enhances the ability of breeders to
identify and advance superior
yielding germplasm. They are

tional one-way clutches, are often
the weakest or the first component
to fail in automatic transmissions.
A torque amplifier is a two
speed power shift transmission
module within a standard trans
mission. Since it is hydraulically
actuated and shifts under power, it
gives older model tractors the
ability to be shifted “on the go,” a
feature not common to tractors
built in the 1960 s and 19705.
While both the Mechanical
Diode and a sprag clutch have the
same basic purpose, the execution
is very different Kelly explains
that for full power, a sprag clutch
relies on the engagement of 30
separate cams to create a wedging
action for lockup. With the
Mechanical Diode, only one of its
six struts needs to engage for
lockup.
