topics at the 1996 Spring Regional
Dairy Goat Producer’s Conference
here at Penn State’s Agriculture
Sciences and Industry Building.
The conference is scheduled
Saturday, March 30, from 7:30
a.m.-4:15 p.m.
In the morning, sessions include
handling milkhouse waste, masti
tis prevention and treatment, and
learning to profit from buck kids.
Also included are proper milking
equipment and deciding on
whether to join DHIA.
In the afternoon, sessions
include what the American Dairy

Goat Association (ADGA) can do
for the commercial dairy farmer,
an overview of the milk market,
managing the large herd, efficient,
economic milk production, and an
open forum for speaker questions
and answers.
Scheduled to speak at the con
ference is Dr. Robert Herr, Nar
von, who will provide his ideas on
how to profit in meat kids. The ses
sion will include opportunities for
expansion in the meat goat trade,
and the feasibility of a meat goal
feedlot. Herr will use his experi
ence as an operator of a meat goat
feedlot to present various manage
ment techniques and the necessity
for maintaining good records.
Patti Dean will offer tips on

her husband, Dennis, own and
operate Willow Run, Inc., a dairy
goat facility located in the gently
rolling farm country south of Day
ton, Ohio. The Dean herd includes
about 400 milking head.
Rene Deleeuw, herdsman for
Coach Farm in upstate New York,
and George Reddick, operator of
Oak Knoll Dairy in Windsor, Vl,
will also speak about their experi
ences in managing a large herd.
Deleeuw milks 400-700 goats,
depending on the season. Reddick,
along with wife Karen Lindbo,
operate a large dairy of exclusively
LaMancha dairy goats. Annual
production is 200,000 pounds and
they use a TMR.
