Agriculture Secretary Charles C. Brosius is urging apple growers to vote in a referendum to change the rate of assessment to growers under the Pennsylvania Apple Marketing Program. The program promotes the sale of Pennsylvania-grown apples and apple products through advertis ing and sple displays, and by serv ing as the industry spokesperson. “Pennsylvania ranks fifth nationally in apple production,” Brosius said. “With increased resources, the Apple Marketing Program can work to enter new markets, including export markets.” The referendum proposes to change the rate of assessment beginning with the 1996-97 marketing sea son to 12 cents per bushel of apples sold for fresh market use and six cents per hundred pounds of apples sold or accepted for processing. Beginning with the 2000-01 marketing sea son, the proposed rate of assessment would increase to IS cents per bushel of apples sold for fresh market use and eight cents per hundred pounds of apples sold or accepted for processing. The proposed amend ment applies to all apple growers in the Com monwealth with five hundred or more apple trees of all ages.
