Happy Valentine’s Day
According to the 1943 Old Farmer’s Almanac, “Love
letters, if enclosed in red envelopes, go through the
mail in South America, half rate. Love letters in
North America, coming into lawyers’ hands, sometimes
cost double.” In the 19905, over 900 million valentines
are sent to mark the February 14 occasion each year,
most of them some sort of preprinted greeting card.
Some would argue that the greeting card is to a letter
o what television is to a book; that is, a poor sub-
J\ stitute for the real thing. (Interestingly, it’s
CUJ estimated that about 90% of greeting cards are
purchased by women.)
1 urfr
e public will always give up its
dinner to read love letters."
