Innovative ideas promise an
exciting 4-H Benefit Auction
slated for Saturday, February 17
beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Farm
and Home Center Auditorium,
1383 Arcadia Road.
Auctioneers will hawk the wares
of everything from fertile emu eggs
and bull semen to diamond
earrings.
Zoann Parker, 4-H extension
agent, said that the funds raised
provide 99 percent of the money
needed for every major 4-H event
held throughout the year for more
than 4,000 members. Monies are
used towards the purchase of edu
cational materials, entry fees to
events, transportation costs, and
other 4-H expenses.
“We want to keep 4-H afford
able for all families,” said Parker,
who constantly upholds “her kids”
(4-H members) as the most out
standing in the nation.
Indeed, Parker herself recently
accompanied four of the county’s
state winners to Puerto Rico when
state funds for sending them to
National 4-H were cut.
“I think they (4-H’ers) should be
given every opportunity they
deserve,” Parker said of the trip
that exposed the team to a different
culture and gave them a chance to
practice their Spanish, explore a
national award dairy farm situated
next to the ocean, a DHIA testing
lab, and a rain forest
Auction donations from friends
of 4-H include an item certain to
interest horse lovers, conservation
ists, and collectors of old books. It
is a 1963 clothback copy of Stor
my, Misty’s Foal, the children's
book by Marguerite Henry. The
original Marguerite Henry book
Misty of Chincoteogue published
in 1947 drew attention to the wild
horses. This Stormy book, is dedi
cated to the children everywhere
who helped restore the wild herds
on Assateaque Island after a
‘Nor’Easter’ devastated the island
in 1962. Arrangements also have
been made by the doner to have the
book signed by Maureen Beebe
Hursh, one of the featured charac
ters in the books, when she visits
the Farm and Home Center on
March 16 as part of the Saddle

and hear the clock tick in a quiet
house. We don’t hear the hum of
the new refrigerator. And, we
don’t listen to our favorite televi
sion programs in the evening.
What we do is play with them
and entertain them. They like to
go in the basement and run the
battery-operated car. Down there
we also have a sliding board, a tri
cycle. and a small table for them
that our son gave us when his
three children outgrew the toys.
One of their favorite things is to
have me read to them. We must all
sit on the sofa so that one can sit
on each side of Grandma. They’re
getting too big for my lap and too
heavy. I’ve kept some of the
books that my children had long

and Winross trucks that will go on
sale at noon. Ertl toys and banks,
plants, household goods, toys and
numerous items will be sold
throughout the day.
Food items will be sold through
out the day by the 4-H Exchange
Club members.
Auction items may be pre
viewed at the Farm and Home Cen
ter on Friday, February 16 between
2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Another thing that we do to pass
the time is drink and eat. Usually I
only have milk or water in the re
frigerator. But, they want juice.
So. we go to the canning shelf and
get a quart of gmpe juice and open
it. I can add some water to it as I
make a concentrate. Then we get
the graham cracker box out of the
cupboard too.
Even I enjoy one thing that we
do to keep busy and that is to go
through old sewing baskets.
Somehow I’ve accumulated a half
dozen from older relatives. They
are quite interesting with odd gad
gets, pretty buttons, an earring,
tiny thimbles or beeswax. Some
have a dried gourd for darning or
even an old campaign button.
There is always something to do.
