sius gave a report from the depart
ment, saying farmers are in diffi
cult times, and if we don't get farm
income up, the Commerce Depart
ment will overtake die Ag Depart
ment as Pdhnsylvania's number
one industry. He announced plans
to invite various segments of agri
culture with common interests to
meet with the PDA staff to discuss

Alan Kelly, dtun, University of
Pennsylvania Veterinary School,
announced progress on the new
solar dairy facility now being built,
and he said moneys have been
nude available for scholarships for
students from Pennsylvania. These
scholarships ate especially mean
ingful because of the increasing
costs of obtaining a degree from
the University.
James Starling, interm dean,
Penn State College of Ag Sciences,
said enrollment has increased, but
funding restraints continue to
plague faculty appointments and
research projects. He said the
search for a new dean is progress
ing but no timetable has been set
for the announcement

Reports from the Senate Ag and
Rural Affairs Committees were
given by Sea Roger Madigan,
Republican chairman, and Sen.
Patrick Stapleton, Democratic
chairman. On the House side. Jay
Howes, director of policy develop
ment, reported for Raymond Bunt,
Jr., Republican chairman, and Wil
liam Upyd Jr., Democratic chair
man repotted from his side.
A number of resolutions were
acted upon by the Council under
the direction of Brenda
Shambaugh. *
In the election of officers, Laura
England, Atlantic Dairy Coopera
tive. was re-election president;
Earl Fink, Pa. Association of Milk
Dealers, was re-elected vice presi
dent, and Roxy LcVan, Pa. Farm
Bureau, was re-elected secretary/
treasurer.
Following the meeting, the
annual Cornucopia drew many of
the state legislators and members
of their staff to the tables of foods
from Pennsylvania. The event is
staged as a meeting place for farm
leaders and the state officials.
