Program (MIP) that the associ
ation is conducting in conjunc
tion with a number of cooperat
ing Pennsylvania seed
companies.

Increasing population to
27,667 plants per acre results
in a slight yield increase but
does not cover the additional
seed cost. At 31,778 plants per
acre, seed cost is much higher
while yield is depressed.
Although yields were not sig
nificantly different, plant
population can have a substan
tial effect on profitability as
seed cost goes up rapidly for
little or no increase in yield.
This data indicates that maxi
mum economic com yields on
Cecil County’s silt loam soils
are likely to be obtained at
plant populations between
24,000 and 28,000 plants per
acre. This project was made
