CARLISLE (Cumberland
Co.) Several mem ben of the
Pennsylvania Forage and Grass
land Council (PFGC) on Tuesday
were presented with awards recog
nizing practices and efforts that
reflect the goals of advancing
knowledge and sound stewardship
associated with grasses and
forages.
The award presentations were
made during a luncheon meeting
of the PFGC held in conjunction
with the annual 1996 Pennsylvania
Crops Conference at the Embers
Inn, in Carlisle."
The crops conference is an
annual event sponsored by the
PFGC, the Pennsylvania Master
Com Growers Association, the
Pennsylvania Soybean Board, and
the Pennsylvania State University
Extension.
During the presentation cere
mony, three award recipients were
acknowledged, and three class
winners of the 199 S Ag Progress

Marvin Hall accepts for Dr. James Starling the PFGC’s high
est award, and Bob Leiby holds a teaching award for Clyde
Mvers.

A PFGC Special Award is the
highest recognition the organiza
tion bestows. The award is a recog
nition of an individual or company
that has made a major contribution
directly to the PFGC, as well as an
outstanding contribution to the
state’s forage and livestock indus
try or conservation farming.
Dr. James Starling, who in
December was named interim
dean of the Penn State College of
Agricultural Sciences, was named
the recipient of the Special Award.
A member of the PFGC, he has
served on its board of directors and
as its president in 1968. While
head of the Penn Spite Agronomy
Department (1969-1985), he was a
strong supporter of the PFGC and
its programs, and that support has
continued.
Starling also was a research pro
ject leader in forage crop breeding
and genetics with the primary
responsibility of studying peren
nial grass breeding and genetics, as
well as teaching graduate students
applied statistics.
He started at Pei
joined the agronomy faculty in
1957. He earned a bachelor degree
in agronomy from Virginia
Polytechnic Institute and State
University, and a master and doc
torate in agronomy from Penn
State.
In addition to serving the Grass
land Council, he has been a mem
ber of the Pennsylvania Plant Food
