Almost Christmas! So, I took
time to read my 1965 diary in
order to see what we did 30 years
ago in December.
All six children were home and
the youngest was two years old.
We spent a lot of time shopping
for their parties and gift exchanges
plus for the family.
The five-year-old and I went to
the woods to gather moss, twigs,
and oak leaves to make a nativity
scene on a large flat mirror. And,
our older boys surprised me by
baking bread and cookies while I
was away shopping.
In those days, I did a lot of iron
ing with five children in school
and often finished when everyone
else was in bed. One of my Christ
mas gifts was a bottle of ink as
then I used a fountain pen instead
of a ballpoint pen.

One night we had our own
Christmas hymn sing and another
time visited the grandparents. My
sister made a large wreath for me
of pine cones and acorns. The kin
dergartner brought home two pap
er angels which I prize and use
even now.
Today we have invited our
extended families to our home for
a drop-in party. If everyone came
that was invited we would have
about 170 people. However, we
usually have SO children, brothers,
sisters and cousins. It will be a
busy afternoon and evening as
usually it is the only time all year
that we have both sides of the fam
ily together.
I wouldn’t want to have Christ
mas more than once a year that
way it is always something very
special.
