Silage Yield is important to all silage growers, but silage quality should also be
figured into the buying decision. Silage yield may be the most important trait for beef
producers or for dairy producers feeding growing heifers and dry cows
Grain Yield will have a significant impact on the energy value of the silage Gram is
nearly 90% digestible and makes up approximately 50% of the silage's weight Thus
gram yield affects both the quality and quantity of silage produced
Silage Crude Protein may be quite important to some producers, but generally
com silage is fed for its energy value. There is relatively little vanation among
hybrids in silage protein Silage protein would be more important if com silage is the
only forage fed to dairy cows
"Silage Digestibility is extremely important for high-producing dairy herds Higher
digestibility generally translates into higher feed intakes and increased milk
production. Pioneer measures com silage digestibility with an in situ method where
the silage is suspended in the cow’s rumen for 24 hours This allows us to calculate
the percent of the forage digested which is reportedjn the column above as in situ
