N.Y. Milk Processors Market Certified Organic
PORT CRANE, N.Y.—The
Northeast Organic Fanning Asso
ciation of New York, Inc. (NOFA
NY) has announced the comple
tion of the organic certification
process of two New York milk
processors.
Mountainside Farms, Inc., of
Jamaica, N.Y. and Sunnydale
Farms, Inc., of Brooklyn, N.Y.,
have received certification as pro
cessors of organic milk and have
begun the marketing of organic
milk.
Mountainside Farms. Inc. is
marketing certified organic milk
under the brand name of Juniper
Valley Organic Milk. Sunnydale
Farms, Inc., is marketing certified
organic milk under the brand
name of Natural by Nature.
Along with the two milk pro
cessors, three N.Y. dairy farms
have completed the NOFA-NY
farm certification process. They
are Alan Babcock, Speckle Acres
Farm, Burlington Flats, N.Y.;
Warren Williams, Jr., Mar-War
Farm, Burlington Flats, N.Y.; and

The certification of organic
milk production involves both
land and dairy herd management.
Land becoming certified must
meet a minimum requirement of
three years since the last applica
tion of synthetic herbicides, pesti
cides, and fertilizers.

Certification also involves the
implementation of adequate buf
fer zones to insure that spray drift
from adjoining conventionally
farmed fields cannot contaminate
the crops and soils of certified
fields. Certification of dairy cattle
requires certified organically
grown feeds, limitations on, the
use of medications, extended
withdrawal times after medication
use, and pasturing of cattle. Dairy
cattle must be fed certified organi
cally grown grains and forages
and adhere to ail other certifica
tion standards for a minimum of
90 days prior to shipping certified
