Happy Birthday, St. Nick!
Nicholas was the bishop of Myra in Asia Minor
during the fourth century. He was known for his
compassion and generosity, both to children and
maidens. Legend has it that St. Nicholas dropped a purse
of gold into the windows of three poor maidens, thus
affording them their dowries so they could be
jMk married. Out of this came the Dutch custom of
laying out the children’s wooden shoes on St.
t[ Nicholas Eve (Dec. 5). Hay and carrots are
I stuffed in the shoes for the saint’s horse, and a
i p beverage is left for St. Nick schnapps, tradi
