total adult program became the
responsibility of the regularly
employed teachers of agriculture.
Regional leadership training
meetings were started in 19SS. The
next year, six regional vice presi
dents were elected to supervise and
promote activities of local associa
tions. In 1957, the State Outstand
ing Young Farmer awards were
established.
As an integral part of the public
school program in vocational agri
culture in Pennsylvania, young
adult farmer classes increased to
an all-time high in 1969.
In 1969, there woo 92 schools
offering systematic instruction to
3,600 men. Fifty of those 92
schools in that year were state

affiliated local units of the PYFA.
In 1960, the annual state con
vention was changed to the Wed
nesday following Thanksgiving
Day and was held at The Pennsyl
vania State University. The change
resulted in a very large increase in
attendance of members and wives.
The success of the 1961 conven
tion may be credited largely to the
planning efforts of the special con
vention committee, to the effective
leadership of the executive com
mittee, to better publicity provided
by timely issues of the Young Far
mer magazine, and certainly to the
stronger local Young Farmer asso
ciations across the state.
The annual convention is cur
rently held in February.
Looking to the future, the YFA
can very well serve as a medium

mer instruction through die public
school system.
The Young Fanners Associa
tion. through participation, can be
an excellent means of providing
training to men and women in agri
culture of all ages, who can
become a source of directors and
officers for new and existing farm
organizations and agricultural
businesses.
The 36th PYFA winter conven
tion is scheduled to be held Feb.
6-8 at the Somerset Ramada Inn
(Exit 10 off of the Pa. Turnpike).
Three chapters Berlin
Brothersvalley, Meyersdale, and
Rockwood are serving a; hosts
for the convention.
Tour are scheduled to be held
Feb. 6 and Feb. 8, while Feb. 7 has
been reserved as the day for the
annual business meeting and edu
cational workshops.
A breakdown of the five meals
over the three days and a Wednes
day Ladies Luncheon, Tour and
Workshop is included on a
registration form.
There is a discount for early
registration fees which cover the
costs of the five meals. The
Ladies* Luncheon, Tour and
Workshop is $l5.

vations by Jan. 12. Regular
registration is due by Feb. 2.
