How many doors do we pass
through in a day, in a lifetime?
It has been four years since we
built a log house for ourselves in a
comer of the meadow. But, I’m
still not accustomed to the open
area plan of our house. The televi
sion can be heard in every comer.
Our 1813 farmhouse had a door to
each room but here only the bed
rooms and bathrooms have doors.
Talking about doors, there was
a room in the large farmhouse.

where I was bom, that had nine
doors in one room. This room was
used as a kitchen for many years.
It was also our li vingroom as other
rooms were closed off during cold
weather. Three doors led to two
porches and three doors led to
three stairways two up and one
down. One was a pantry door and
two others led to different rooms.
There are other kinds of doors
in our lives that we must close
when a relative or Mend dies.
Closing doors can be difficult and
painful. When our oldest child
went to New York state to college.
