818-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, November 11, 1995 Pa. Grange Kicks Off Convention With Contests, Donation WEST MIDDLESEX (Mercer Co.) They say charity begins at home. It was only fitting that the Erst day of the Pennsylvania State Grange convention here in Mercer County opened with a financial contribution to an area deaf center for children. The Pennsylvania State Grange Deaf Activities Department pre sented a check for $2OO to the Mercer County Education and Rehabilitation Center in Hermit age as part of the Sign-A-Song and Public Speaking program held in the West Middlesex High School auditorium. The check wis made possible by a donation from Jackson Grange #1506 of Mercer County. The 123rd annual Pennsylvania State Grange convention was held Oct. 23-26. Stephanie Strecansky, execu tive director of the center, thanked the Grange for its long-standing support the last two decades. “The Grange has always been there for us the past 20 years and has been very, very helpful in pro viding financial assistance to aid in our mission,” Strecansky said to die audience of about 500 people. “We thank you deeply for ena bling us to work with deaf and hard-of-hearing children.” The Sign-A-Song competition is held simultaneously with the Public Speaking contest to show case the talents of Grange mem bers. Sign-A-Song entrants per form sign language to a musical selection incorporating theatrics, body expression and “signability” while public speakers demonstrate the skills that were learned through paiticipation in the Grange. Dean Miller of Battlefield Grange in Adams County took first place in the individual perfor mance of the Sign-A-Song competition. The judges credited Miller with great interpretation of the song, outstanding body expression and a good to excellent overall perfor mance. By placing first, Miller won the right to compete at the 1996 National Grange convention in Spokane, Washington. In order of finish in the Sign-A- Song was 11a May McMillin, Westfield Grange, Lawrence County, Laura McMillin, West field Grange, Roy McMillin, Westfield Grange, and Nancy McMillin, also Westfield Grange.
