U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman will speak to more than 34,000 FFA members, advisors, supporters and guests at the 68th National FFA Convention in Kan sas City, Mo. Glickman will give remarks at 1 pan. Friday, Nov. 10, the second day of the three-day convention, the nation’s largest annual student gathering. Prior to being sworn in as the 26th U.S. secretary of agriculture on March 30,1995, Glickman rep resented Kansas’ 4th Congres sional District in the U.S. House of Representatives for 18 years. He served on the House Agricul ture Committee for nearly two decades, including six years as chairman of the Subcommittee on General Farm Commodities and its predecessor, the Subcommittee on Wheat, Soybeans and Feed Grains. The Cumberland County dub of the Year Award was won by the Conodoguinet Sheep Club. John Creek of Shippensburg was the winner of the Outstanding 4-H Boy honor. The 15-ycar-old has been a 4-H member for seven years. He is a dairy dub member and a participant in the wildlife habitat judging team. The Outstanding 4-H Girl award was captured by 17-year-old Le- Anne Haycock of Shippensburg. She has been in 4-H for five years, is Convention Slates Department of Agriculture. The 68th National FFA Cork, vcntion also features session' filled with recognition of FFA, members’ accomplishments and addresses by top speakers includ ing John Alston, motivational speaker; Emanuel Cleaver, mayor of Kansas City; Diana Golden, Olympic gold medal skier, Fred McClure, motivational speaker and former national FFA secretary from Texas; Jeanne Robertson, humorist; Shawntel Smith, Miss America, sponsored by AGC® Corporation; and David Toma, former New York City policeman. Dr. Orr Brermeman, accepted the award on behalf of die district Rebecca Comman of Boiling Springs captured the Outstanding Junior 4-H’er Award. She is 14 'years old and has been a 4-H mem ber for half of her life, and has been involved in dairy, food, and clothmg projects. The Gladys Holtry Award, which recognizes outstanding 4-H leaders, was granted to Sandy Long of Car lisle, who has been a 4-H leader for 31 years and is the coach of the county drill team. Jason Mowcry of Shippcnsburg Berks Holds Market Steer Roundup LEESPORT (Berks Co.) On October 11 at the Leespon Far mers Market, Inc., the Bala County 4-H Beef Club held its an nual market-steer roundup. Fred Weaver ofEphrata judged die 18 market steers. The champion steer was shown by David Newpherof Fleetwood The steer was a 1,285-pound crossbred steer. Reserve went to Kelly Dietrich of Hamburg, with her steer named “Duce." The steer was a Charolais/Limousin cross bred The steers woe then sold. An nex Florist of New York purchas ed the grand champion steer and Meridian Bank purchased the re serve grand champion steer. The club had a very successful sale with all steers averaging $2OO-5300 above market price. 4-H’ers are now looking for ward to their annual 4-H Live stock banquet held Nov. 4 at the Kutztown Grange.
