Superior 4-H Award win ner Kirsten Kauffman remembers when one third grader she spoke to at an elementary school in Penn Manor recently asked her if there was a 4-H club for those who like to jump from airplanes and “air surf.” Kirsten told the third grader that while there weren’t any clubs that featured skydiving from airplanes in Lancaster County, the fact that 4-H clubs exist in which they could join to pursue their hobbies “got their attention,” she said. On Thursday evening Kirsten was recognized as the 1994 Super ior Award Winner at the Lancaster County 4-H Leaders Banquet at Millersville University. Kirsten joined about 60 other leaders—together with many sup porters, families, and friends at a night to recognize the achieve ments of the 4-H club leaders in Lancaster County. Kirsten. 17, daughter of Ken and Margaret Kauffman, Elizabeth town, spoke of her recent experi ences in speaking to elementary school children about the benefits of joining 4-H. Last week, she spoke to third graders of the Penn Manor school district. “They were all fired up over the programs, finding all the things they can do, asking about hobbies,” she said. Kirsten is scheduled to speak at the upcom ing Lancaster Farmland Trust banquet. The Saddle Cinches and Horse Project member said that speaking one day to elementary school and then next to Trust members pre sents challenges. The Elizabeth town High School senior, who serves as copy editor of the school yearbook, die Elizabethan, will attend college, possibly to study journalism. Kirsten said she wants to return someday as a 4-H leader in the horse programs in the county. Leaders honored at the banquet included Nancy Good, Akron, for cy Good, Akron, for the Ephrata-Cocalico 4-H Club, for 25 years of service to 4-H; David Henlsee, Columbia, of the Northwest 4-H Dairy Club In Elizabethtown, for 30 years of service; and Kendy Allen, horse club leader, Manheim, for 25 years of service. Kirsten Kauffman, right, was honored by Kerry Boyd at the banquet Thursday night.
