be the best indicator of potential
yield. Individual plants may
respond to low plant population by
producing more stems per square
foot.
Wisconsin research shows that
maximum yields are produced
with SS or more stems per square
foot. Next spring, after growth
starts, return to suspected fields
and count the number of stems per
square foot. When stems average
only 40 per square foot, yields are
reduced by 25 percent
Identification of suspected
fields in the fall will save time next
spring when things are rushed.

Editor:
On Monday, September 25, I
was helping to entertain preschool
and kindergartners who were wait
ing for an FFA member to give
them a tour of the Farm Show
Complex during the All American
Dairy Show. Some other dairy
princesses and I were explaining
the route that milk takes to get
from the cow to the store where
their parents buy it. I was asked to
assist on one tour because it was a
particularly large group and only
one FFA member, Ann from Cedar
Crest, was available for the tour.
When we came to where the
cows were being milked the chil
dren were able to see part of what
we, as dairy princesses, had
explained to them earlier. I would
like to especially thank two far
mers who took the time to explain
the milking process to these chil-

the bulk tank and pointed out the

a chance to get your names and
addresses for a more personal note
of thanks, so I hope that this paper
makes its way into your hands.
I pray that the children’s appe

your willingness, patience and
enthusiasm to share your knowl
edge with them encouraged me to
continue to do my best to promote
this wonderful industry.
These children will probably not
remember everything you told
them but at least they were
impressed by the cleanliness and
the technology used in the produc

THANK YOU!!!!!
