MANHEIM (Lancaster Co.)
A different year and a different
judge but for Corby Zeigler it was
a replay of last year’s sheep show
at the Manheim Fair.
“It’s just like last year,” the
estactic 1.1-year-old said as he
clutched the trophy for the sheep
that won over all market and sale
lamb entries. Both years, Corby
said that he placed fifth in show
manship and then went on to place
first in the heavyweight sale lamb
class, the sale lamb overall, and
then the grand champion market
sale lamb.
Corby kept a glimmer of hope
all through the seven-hour show
with 115 entries that he might have
a repeat performance.
“But my dad thought he was a
little too heavy and didn’t think
he’d make it,” Corby said giving
the 127-pound sheep a pat on the

sister Tracy showed at the Ephrata
Fair two weeks earlier.
Although! it was the first year
that the 11-year-old Derick
showed a grand champion market
hog, he and his sisters Tracy and
Amy are familiar names showing
in hog competition throughout the
county. The children of Eugene
and Carol Bollinger raise hogs and
sheep on their Manheim Farm.
Judge Russell Kegg, a Bedford
County commercial hog breeder,
said of the champions of each divi
sion: “It’s sad that I must pull out
only one champion from this fine
group of hogs. They are all top of
the line. If you bred the hog, you
can be proud of doing such a fine
job. If you purchased it, you can be
proud for making such a fine
selection.”
A newcomer to competition
took the reserve grand champion
market title. It was the first year
that 12-year-old Jonathan Halde
man showed hogs, although his
family has a 1,000-head finisher
unit on their Manheim farm.
“I had this feeling I would win
after it was named the medium
heavyweight champion,” Jonathan
said.
His parents, John and Kay Hal
deman weren’t as optimistic. His
dad said, “1 knew he would be

head.
The son of Dean and Carole Zei
gler of Lititz attributes his success
in the show ring to plenty of walk
ing every day with his sheep. The
Zeiglers purchased their* sheep
from Lloyd Reiff of Strasburg.
His brother Brandon gave him
some opposition in the show ring
when he took first place in another
heavyweight class, but it was the
Donough brothers that brought the
sdffest competition.
Travis Donough claimed the
reserve heavyweight champion
and the reserve sale lamb champ
ionship but when his brother
brought his champion market lamb
back into the show ring, judge Tim
Fleener selected it for the reserve
champion overall.
The Donough brothers are the
sons of Ed and Laßue Donough of
Manheim. The Donoughs breed
their own sheep, and Ryan’s
champion market lamb that was
competing against kids who had
money and went to other states to
buy a good hog. I told him
(Jonathan) that we are just going to
pull a few head from our farm and
what he gets is just going to need to
be good enough.”
Those hogs, raised by Dale Roh
rer in Lititz before finishing out on
the Haldeman farm, matched the
best.
Derick’s champion and
Jonathan’s reserve champion had
stiff competition from the champ
ions in each divison selected from
more than 100 head. The light
weight champion was shown by
Melissa Becker and the reserve by
Dwight Lehman. Travis Donough
showed the champion medium
weight and Kevin Pfautz, the
reserve. Kyle Ward showed the
reserve medium heavyweight
champion and Jeffrey Rohrer, the
reserve heavyweight.
Showmanship competition was
divided into four categories. Amy
Bollinger topped the 16-years and
over, Lisa Pfautz, 14- and 15-year
olds; Kyle Ward, the
11-13-year-olds; and Nicole
Kreider, the 8-10 year olds.

named reserve overall is a home

ionship at the Denver Fair.
The 11-year-old said that Eclip
se will not be sold but will be used
for breeding on their farm.
Ryan also placed first in show
manship in his age division.
Jessica Stoltzfiis, daughter of
Frank and Irene Stoltzfiis, of Eli
zabethtown took the lightweight
market lamb title and then the
reserve market lamb tide.
The breeding sheep champion
trophy went to Jessica Schmidt of
Drumore.
“It’s my favorite,” Jessica said
of the Dorset named Mateau. Jessi
ca, the daughter of Peter and Laur
ie Schmidt, said that Mateau was
bred from a Sleepy Hollow ewe
and a Nix Besser ram. Mateau won
championships before at the 4-H
Fair and at Lampeter Fair.
