FREDERICK, Md. The re
sults of Frederick County 4-H
youth’s hard work went through
the sale ring at the showcase of
champions sale. The sale was held
m conjunction with the 133rd
Great Frederick Fair at the Freder
ick County Fairgrounds.
Prices were strong, and the
community came out in force to
show its support for the county’s
youth. “1 don’t think anybody
could ask fqr anything better, es
pecially for the kind of year it’s
been,” said Ed Wachter, chairman
of the sale committee. One hund
red eighty-five youth participated
in the event.
Hogs brought an average of
5407.01 by the head, or $1.70 per
pound. Kathy Gordon, swine su
perintendent, was delighted with
this year’s sale “Our show this
year is one o( the best we’ve ever
had,” she said. Weight ranges on
the pigs were from 210 to 260
pounds
Erie Holu’s grand champion

brought 56.50 per pound from
buyer F & M Bank. The pig was

Frederick Posts Champion Sale Results
then donated back to be resold at
the Frederick Livestock sale with
the proceeds going to the 4-H
Camp Center. Eric, the 15-year
old son of Vaughn Holtz and
Kathryn English, is a three-year
member of the Eyler Valley 4-H
club. “She just filled out real nice,
and I’m real proud of her,” he said
ol his 243-pound gill.
Reserve grand champion pig
was a 260-pound Hampshire gill
raised by Daryl Hood. Daryl is a
member of the Johnsvillc 4-H
Club. His pig was purchased by
Tom Walker of Homeland, USA
lor 54.35 a pound.
The Wollc Pig, owned by
County 4-H Queen Kim Stup, was
a special lundraiscr for the 4-H
Livestock judging team. Wolfe In
dustrial Auctioneers, Inc. of Get
tysburg, sponsored the sale of the
pig. Kim was guaranteed $l.BO
per pound for her Yorkshire/
Hampshire cross gilt. The 235
pounder was purchased by high
bidder Bob Dinsmore of Ceres
ville Ford-New Holland for $3 per
pound.
Forty seven market lambs
brought an average of $411.15 a
head, or $3.56 per pound.

Seventeen-year-old Rebecca
Fortner’s last year as a member of
the LewistOwn Mountain View
club ended with a bang. Rebecca
had the grand champion market
lamb at the sale, a 126-pound Suf
folk wether. A bidding war drove
the price of Rebecca’s lamb up to
$30.50 per pound, surpassing last
year’s top price of $3O per pound.
Generous purchasers were
Remsburg Paving, and Jimmy
Remsburg. Rebecca is the daugh
ter of Robert and Robin Fortner of
Foxville. Her mother gives credit
to Rebecca’s sister, Megan, for
“doing most of the legwork” with
the sheep.
Reserve grand champion mar
ket lamb was a 107-pound wether
owned by Jennifer Biser. The
lamb brought $21.50 from Giant
Food, Inc.
The special fundraising lamb
was the Miller lamb, sponsored by
the Jim Miller family of Sabillas
ville. Tymon Hevner, the 4-H
King, was guaranteed $2.50 per
pound. When the bidding was
over, his 105-pound mainly Suf
folk wether brought $2O per
pound from a group of buyers:

ceeds from the sale went to the
Therapeutic Riding Program, and
then the lamb was donated back to
be sold again, with proceeds to
benefit the Livestock Judging
Team. “It was the best lamb I’ve
ever had,” said Tymon
Eighty-four steers commanded
an average of $1,563.98 per head,
or $1.31 per pound.
The grand champion steer was a
1,235-pound Angus/Limosin
cross named “Streak” belonging
to Sarah Wiles. The 16-year-old
daughter of Tom and Myralee
Wiles said she “worked hard, and
it paid off in the end.” Sarah is a
member of the Tri-Valley Live
stock club. Middletown Ford pur
chased Sarah’s steer for $6.25 per
pound.
Reserve grand champion steer
at the sale belonged to 12-year-old
Jennifer Butler. “Panda,” a four
way cross of Angus, Maine-An
jou, Simmental, and Hereford,
weighed in at 1,260 pounds. He
