Fanning, Saturday, Octobif 7,1995 Horse Show and Barbecue Chicken The public is invited to attend an open youth schooling horse show and chicken barbecue being offered by the Northampton Coun ty 4-H Center on Sunday. OcL 8. The open youth schooling horse show, open to dll youths ages 8-19 years, will be held at the North ampton County 4-H Center on Bushkill Center Rd., Bushkill Township. It will start at 10 a.m. and include walk-trot, open, jump ing, and fun classes for all abilities and styles. The judge for the day will be Brett Shorley, a former 4-H-er and judge from Berks County. He will offer helpful information and poin ters to all. Also during this event, from noon until 3 p.m., the Northamp ton County 4-H Center will offer its famous barbecued chicken for the public. The chicken is served as adult platters (1/2 chicken), children’s platters (1/4 chicken), and just 1/2 chicken. The platters will include a baked potato, pickled cabbage/applesauce, rolls and butter. Come early as the quantities will be limited. Take out orders will also be available. The Northampton County 4-H Center is raising funds to repay the loan on the new 45 foot x 90 foot pole bam at the facility. This year the board has held some very suc cessful fundraisers, including a chicken barbecue during the Northampton County 4-H Round up in August and an auction/fun day at the 4-H Center. The State 4-H Horse Show will be held Oct. 27-29 at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg. 4-H’ers Participate in District Dairy Show Somerset County 4-H dairy club members participated in the South west District 4-H Dairy Show held in Fulton County on Sept. 2 and qualified 26 of the 43 county ani mals exhibited for the State Junior Dairy Show scheduled for Sept. 25 at the Farm Show Complex. Somerset County 4-H’ers cap tured championships in three of the six breeds. In the Brown Swiss breed, Adam Coleman of Berlin captured the grand and senior champion award, Rebekah Fox of Berlin won the reserve grand and junior championship and the best animal bred and owned, and Sarah Saylor of Rockwood was the reserve junior champion. In the Holstein competition, Dan Ream of Markleton was chosen junior champion while Juliana of Berlin was reserve junior champion. Ricki Johnson of Somerset was named junior champion of the Jersey breed, and Joshua Van Tassel of Friedens had the best Jersey bred and-owned. Receiving plaques for outstand ing showmanship abilities were Dana Bittner, Adam Coleman, Jodi Flick, Zachary Foreman, Gretchen Fox, Rebekah Fox. New 4-H Club to Start Boys and girls ages 8-12 who enjoy sewing or crafts are invited to join the newest 4-H Club in the Potts town area. So-Fro, located behind the Coventry Mall, has offered free use of their facilities and sewing machines for the club. Plus, mem bers will get a discount on all fabr ic and craft supplies purchased. The club will meet there on the second Thursday of each month frolh 6:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. and also on some additional Thursdays to work on 4-H projects. Four local volunteers, including So-Fro Manager, Joanne Books, will be heading the club. The first meeting on Oct. 12 is an informational one and a parent must attend with their child. The first project will be a draw-tight tote bag and membes will learn how to use the sewing machine and how to do basic straight stitching. During the wint er and spring the group wit work on other projects selected by the 4-H Horse Club Lancaster County 4-H Horse Club members developed their “Horse Sense” this summer while competing on the junior and senior horse judging teams.
