Steps to Establishing A New Lawn Early fall is a good time to start a new lawn or renovate an old one. For detailed instructions, ask for Extension Circular 412, Renova tion of Lawns from your county extension office. Here’s a few general steps. Have your soil tested to deter mine if it needs lime or fertilizer. Take soil cores from at least IS spots randomly over the lawn to obtain a representative sample. If you have a problem area, take separate soil samples from each. Scrape away and discard sur face debris before taking sampc. Sample to a two-or-three-inch depth. Collect the sample in a clean container. Mix the core sam plings, air dry and remove roots and stones. Fill the soil test mail ing container and identify the sample. Complete the Information Sheet giving all the information requested. Soil sample mailing kits are available from Penn State Cooperative Extension. The cost is $6. Rough grade the area, removing all debris including large stones. Grade off high spots and fill low spots. You may need additional soil. Apply 25 to SO pounds of limes tone per 1000 square feet if no test was taken. Apply basic fertilizer (pho sphate and/or potash) according to soil test recommendations. Before an October seeding, broadcast and rake into a soil depth of 2-4 inches, 20 pounds of 0-20-20 fer tilizer, per 1000 square feet plus 25 to 30 pounds per 1000 square feet of 10-5-5 fertilizer. 35 percent or more of the total nitrogen should be as water insoluablc nit rogen. Rent a rototiller to till materials including organic mat ter, compost a fertilizer into a four-to-six-inch soil depth. Finish grade by hand or rake to remove stones or debris. Raking is necessary to smooth the surface. If possible, allow.the area to settle for about a week before final rak ing. A heavy watering speeds up the settling. Apply seed by dividing total seed quantity into two equal lots, sowing one lot in one direction and the second lot at right angles to the first with a turf-type disk seeder or spreader.
