Making die “most of the money" allowed Jessica Stolzfus to capture supreme champion ewe and ram on Wednesday evening at the New Holland Fair Sheep Show. Jessica. IS, daughter of Frank and Irene Stoltzfus, Elizabeth town, said her family obtains “the best sheep we can for the money we want to vend." They apparent ly struck it rich at the sheep show. Jessia picked up grand champion ram with her Dorset ram lamb, “Kermit," and worichampion ewe with her Dorset yearling ewe, “Penelope.” Jessica swept the breeding sheep show with her Dorset ewe. champion breeding sheep, and Dorset ram, reserve champion. Jessica, a freshman at Elizabeth town High School, said she pur chased die champion ewe from Penn State at a Virginia sale. The fust ewe was named after the “P” in Penn State Penny. The sec ond, also in honor of the college, was named Penelope. Jessica said her best friend. Tori Cinder, offered the name “Kermit” for the champion ram. This is Jessica’s first champion ship at the New Holland Fair. The seven-year county 4-H member said she has been showing since she was five years old, with her fust show at Elizabethtown. Jessia has been showing three years at the New Holland Fair Sheep Show and plans to show at the Keystone International Livestock Expo, the Manheim Farm Show, and the state Farm Show. Cheryl Fairbairn, livestock agent in Chester County, said that when judging a grand champion, she is looking for “an animal that best typifies what that particular breed is doing today, which direc tion it is going.” For the champion ewe, Fairbairn said she liked the “volume, capacity, and strength we see in this ewe.” Market lamb champion was Tracy Bollinger, showing her Dorset wether from'the heavy weight division. Tracy, 18, daughter of Gene and Carole Bol linger, Manheim, obtained the champion from Ken Staver, Hershey. Fairbaim said the wether is “extremely lean and well-muscled throughout.” In all, there was a total of 107 animals and 34 exhibitors. Follow ing is a list of show placings. Holstein Club FLEETWOOD (Berks Co.) —The Berks County Holstein Club will sponsor a bus trip to Lantland Farms of Horseheads, NY and Gorwood-D Holsteins of Mansfield, PA. The trip will take place on Saturday, November 18, 1995. The bus will leave the Berks Co. Ag Center parking lot at 7 AM and arrive at Lantland a little before noon. The Lantz’s, Ross, Walter, Marlin and Maige, oper ate a 200+ cow dairy with a BAA of 108.9 and a herd average over 20,000 pounds of milk. Haylage and com silage from 6SO acres of crop ground along with grain fed through a Smart Feeder make up the ration. Rag Apple and Cana dian bloodlines form the bulk of the herd, with the Lucy family being one of their favorites. Show ing and merchandising are given a lot of attention in the Lantland herd. The cattle are kept in a stall bam and bedded with lots of sawdust. The feed, including haylage, com silage and baled hay, is grown on 2,000 acres of cropland. The Woods have been active in the sales business, and Ron is currently serving on the Board of Directors of Holstein USA. The family enjoys showing and sharing their thoughs and philosophies on agriculture and the breeding of great Holstein cows.
