Dean began his career with
DHIA as a supervisor in Lancaster
County more than 40 years ago
building an outstanding circuit of
90 herds over a 16-year period.
In 1970, Dean transferred to
State College to work for Pennsyl
vania DHIA to manage die newly
opened Central Milk Testing
Laboratory, one of the first centr
alized and electronically equipped
DHIA laboratories in the world.
While managing the lab. Dean
had the opportunity to serve as the
first president of the North Ameri
can Lab Association and saved
on the Advisory Committee for
five years.
Also included in Dean’s past
laboratory experiences are manag
ing and overseeing the first labor
atory to test for the protein compo
nent and being among the first to
test somatic cell count in 1976. In
1980 he was instrumental in facili
tating the first fully computerized
laboratory.
After almost 20 years of excel
lent service in that capacity and
after earning recognition as the
foremost DHIA lab manager in
North America, Dean transferred
to the newly formed department of
support services where he suc
cessfully developed many new
functions, including a sample
transportation system that was less
expensive than the previous sys
tem. He went on to set-up and
coordinate 92 truck slops through
out the state which consisted of
five truck routes.

Dean Amick Continues
To Serve Pa.DHIA
In 1991 to present. Dean has
served as director of Field Opera
tions. These job duties include
being responsible for all field
operations. He oversees and is
responsible for the activities of
160 employees.
The service area of Pa. DHIA
includes Pennsylvania, New
York, Maryland, New Jersey and
Missouri. This market share con
sists of 260,000 cows.
A typical day for Dean includes
returning and answering phone
calls from dairymen, receiving
and making phone calls to Pa.
DHIA technicians, attending staff
meetings, attending county and

regional member and technician
meetings.
Through the years Dean has
seen several changes take {dace in
the DHIA system. Having the
opportunity to play a part in it all
has given him a special inner
satisfaction.
Dean is an avid softball fan.
Having played softball most of his
life, hie is currently district com
missioner for a nine-county area
responsible for 600 softball teams.
He also had the opportunity to
serve as administrative assistant
for the men’s fastpitch team at the
1987 Pan American Games.
In the local area he has served
