This one was a community picnic held at a local church grounds. The village of Oregon has banded together to accomplish things for the good of the commun ity. They have a crime watch and are hoping they can remain a small village with a friendly atmosphere. At one time it was a bustling stop on the Reading to Lancaster road. It had a store, a post office, cigar manufacturing, shoe maker and blacksmith shops, butcher shops and a grist mill. Now it boasts a nice restaurant, some shops, a bed and breakfast and the mill turned into offices. There is always pressure to develop the sur rounding area. But the residents hope to keep it a small, quiet village. As the leaves begin to fall off the trees, we finish some of the last jobs in our gardens. My husband is making supports for his new red raspberries and I’m picking lots of lima beans. This year I planted three kinds and the pole limas, that grow on a permanent fence, are doing fine. We even managed to run out of plastic freezer contain ers and had to buy some for the sweetcom. I’ve been able to give some of my many tomatoes away. When I went to my Bible Study group last week, I took not only big tomatoes but also a quart and a pint of cherry tomatoes.
