Joleen Herbert Shows Champion Market Lamb At Ephrata
LOU ANN GOOD
Lancaster Farming Staff
EPHRATA (Lancaster Co.)
Jolecn Herbert had “a feeling that
just maybe” she would capture the
grand champion market lamb title
at the Ephraia Fair on Wednesday
night.
She wasn’t disappointed. After
three years of showing, the Penn
State Berks Campus freshman was
elated to claim her first grand
champion title.
“All that exercising paid off,”
Jolecn said of taking the time to
commute from her Terre Hill home
to a New Hdlland farm to run her
three sheep through hurdles daily.
The grand champion is the same
sheep that took reserve market
lamb honors at the Denver Fair two
weeks ago. Named Scoltie, the
heavyweight champion, was pur
chased from Lloyd Reiff of
Slrasburg.
Judge Tim Fleener, a Hamp
shire and Southdown breeder from
Lebanon County, said that the
122-pound heavyweight is tight,
neat, showy, and the biggest
Iramc, longest lamb at the show.
The reserve champion market
lamb shown by Radcll Peters was
also a formidable heavyweight
with just the right amount of condi
tioning and good overall packag
ing according to Fleener.
Radcll, son of Raymond and
Rebecca Peters Irom Middletown,
was extremely proud that his
131-pound heavyweight was a
homebred lamb that he raised from
a “baby.”
In the breeding sheep competi
tion, grand champion honors over
all breeds went to a Southdown
ewe owned by Jay Zimmerman.
The 15-ycar-old said that he was
equally happy to win the trophy as
he was to lop his sister 13-year-old
Jennifer in the competition.
“1 always knew that I would beat
her sometime,” he said of the
sibling rivalry in the show nng.
The champion Southdown
named Blueberry was purchased in
Ohio. Jay and his sister, who live
with parents Jay and JoAnn in
Akron, traveled in a pickup truck
with their aunt to the Ohio sale
where they picked up seven sheep.
“I picked out three of my own
without any help,” Jay said of the
grand champion breeding sheep. “I
knew that one of these times, she
would win.”
At the El ta Sheep Show, from the left, Keith Bollinger is champion showman
ship winner, as Judged by Tim Fleener, and Keith’s brother Jerry, is reserve champion
showman.
It was nip and tuck between
Jay’s Southdown and Jessica Stolt
zfus’s grand champion Dorset
ewe. In fact, the two competitors
alternated wins in the overall breed
competition with Jessica taking
champion ram honors, and Jay, the
reserve. Then Jay took champion
ewe with Jessica taking the
reserve. In the end it was the ewes
that topped the all breeds.
Judge Fleener said, “It’s diffi
cult to judge a ram and ewe against
each other because they are both
different and are supposed to be
different.”
Jessica’s Dorset is a one-year
old named Brittany, which she
purchased. Jessica, 15-year-old
daughter of Frank and Irene Slolt
zfus, raises about 20 ewes on their
Elizabethtown farm.
Also competing for the title
were Amy Haines with the Colum
bia breed champion; Keith Bollin
ger with the Cheviot champion:
Alex Lauffer with the Romney
champion; Amy Bollinger with the
Shropshire champion; and Jeff
Bollinger with the Suffolk
champion.
In showmanship competition,
two Ephrata brothers weilded their
sheep with ease and style. Sixteen
year-old Keith Bollinger was
named grand champion showman
with his 19-ycar-old brother Jerry
taking the reserve title. The
brothers, sons of Raymond and
Sharon Bollinger, have about 25
sheep together and both competed
m the senior exhibitor class.
In the intermediate class, Jennif
er Zimmerman placed first. Josh
Hoover, son of Marty and Lois
Hoover of Denver, look first in the
beginner division.
