Lamb ‘Walks’ To Supreme Ewe Championship At Reading
ANDY ANDREWS
Lancaster Farming Staff
KUTZTOWN (Berks Co.)
When choosing a champion ewe,
some judges count on how “they
walk out,” said David Lytle.
Lytle, sheep show judge at the
Reading Fair on Monday, liked the
way a Corriedale ewe lamb
appeared in the show ring, espe
cially how it walked.
The ewe, named “Primrose,”
was exhibited by Kelly Glaser, 14,
daughter of Karen and Robert
Glaser, Limekiln. Kelly, in the
10th grade at Exeter High School,
said the ewe was named in honor
ol the dwe’s mother, Rosie.
Kelly said she received a lot of
help Irom her grandmother, Ruth
Hartman, Limekiln, in selecting a
champion ewe. This was Kelly’s
lirst supreme champion at the
Reading Fair
This year, the Reading Fair was
held at the Kul/town Fairgrounds
while a new 4-H and fair exhibi
tion center is constructed near the
extension headquarters.
Bruce Snyder, 20, son of Forrest
and Lorraine Snyder, Kul/town,
showed his Dorset fall ram to
champion ram at the fair. This is
the 6lh supreme champion ram
Bruce has shown at the fair.
The Snyders are also showing at
the Bloomsburg Fair early this
week. In addition, they plan to
show at the state Farm Show.
Lytle, show judge, raises Hamp
shircs at his farm in New London.
In all, there were a total of 24
exhibitors and 125 sheep at the
Reading Fair. Following is a list of
show placmgs.

Cost-Share Cap Raised
ANNAPOLIS, Md. Mary
land Department of Agriculture
(MDA) Secretary Lewis R. Riley
announced that the cost-share
funding cap for animal waste stor
age systems has been raised from
$33,000 to $30,000 per project
under the Maryland Agricultural
Water Quality Cost-Share Prog
ram (MACS).
A maximum of $65,000 in assis
tance is now available per farm
when animal waste storage sys
tems are combined with other best
management practices (BMPs)
aimed at protecting water quality
in the Chesapeake Bay and its
tributaries.
‘The new funding caps are
designed to help farmers offset the
tremendous costs associated with
building an animal waste contain
ment structure,” said Riley.
“These structures are one of the
most important tools available to
farmers for managing nutrient
runoff from large livestock opera
tions. We’re pleased to be in a pos-

ition to help farmers do their part
on behalf of the Bay,” he said.
The new funding caps apply to
animal waste management sys
tems constructed after August 24,
1995. Containment structures
completed before this date are ine
ligible for the new rates. Applica
tions on file at MDA will bo
adjusted to reflect the new funding
levels.
Earlier this year, the Governor’s
Blue Ribbon Panel on Financing
Alternatives for Maryland’s Tri
butary Strategies proposed raising
the cost-share cap for animal waste
storage systems. The average cost
of installing these systems is
$55,000, with some systems priced
at more than $90,000.
Because of the expense
involved, the Blue Ribbon Panel
found that animal waste storage
structures, which can range from a
concrete-lined lagoon to a roofed
or covered structure, were being
cost-shared at a level substantially
lower than other agricultural best
management practices.
