YORK (York Co.) A home
bred, four-year-ol# Holstein was
named Supreme Dairy Champion
as the highlight of two days of
open class dairy competition at the
York Fair.
“Coredale Calypso Janis” was
bred by the Rodman Thompson
family’s Coredale Holsteins of
East Berliln, and is owned and ex
hibited by sister and brother Shir
ley Trimmer and Roy Thompson.
Judges John Burket, East Free
dom, and Steve Shaw, Williams
burg, praised her extreme tallness,
tremendous width in the heart and
overall conformation and called
her a “nine-plus on a scale of one
to 10.”
Janis is scored VG-87 and pro
jected to a lactation total of over
24,000 milk. She is sired by Ap
plcnotch Valiant Calypso and
from an EX-scored Chairman
dam. The Thompson family began
exhibiting Janis as a heifer and
both her dam and granddam were
members during past years of the
Coredale Holsteins’ showstring.
As the York Fair’s Supreme
Champion, Janis was awarded the
revolving M. Ebert Rutter plaque,
presented annually to the top dairy
individual. The award is sponsor
ed by Rutter Bros. Dairy in me
mory of M. Ebert Rutter, one of
the firm’s founders and a long
time director and supporter of the
York Fair.
Rutter’s own homebred senior
two-year-old, “Rutter Bros Pro
Kings Leamay” earned the Re
serve Supreme Champion title.
Judges Shaw and Burket were
highly complimentary of the
young cow’s “strong front end,
trcmendouse feet and legs and
open rib,” and noted they would
not change her in any way. She is
sired by Jensgolden V Protein
King and her dam is Rutter Bros.
Victorys Lauren. Leamay is also a
veteran of the tanbark, having
been shown as a heifer by the Rut
ter family of York.
Unclassified, Leamay was still
milking 62 pounds on her last
DHIA test, after 241 days into lac
tation, and is projected to finish
with 19,988 milk, 936 fat and 669
protein. She is due to calve back in
November.
As Reserve Supreme Champion
winners, the Rutter family was
presented the Beatrice May Ball-
Catherine May Kurtz memorial
award. It is given annually by the
William Everhart family of York
in memory of the May sisters who
were long-time exhibitors at the
York Fair.
Judges Shaw and Burket offer
ed high praise for all the cham
pions standing tail-to-tail in the
show arena for the Supreme selec
tion, noting them to be exemplary
representatives of their respective
breeds.
Champion Ayrshire was
“Goodies Ann Corben Alice,” a
three-year-old exhibited by the
Jeff Stambaugh family of Spring
Grove. She is sired by Conebella
Corben and her dam is Masonic-H
Mae Goodies Ann.
“One of the most angular cows
in the nng,” the judges described
her, adding praise for her length
and levelness over her hooks and
pins.
Though officially shown as a
dry three-year-old, the Brown
Swiss champion was close to
freshening and showed so much
milkiness that she earned the top
spot over other milking entries.
