Layer Flocks recently discovered in Pennsylva nia flocks, could pose a challenge to your broiler or layer flocks in the coming months. 203 The isolates Ark ansas and Delaware 072 were found present in two separate flocks, located miles apart in Lancaster County, according to Dr. Sherrill Davison, VMD, Poultry Diagnostic Lab at the University of Pennsylvania. Davison recently spoke to about 30 poul try producers and agri industry representatives at the Poultry Manage ment and Health Semi nar at Kreider’s Restaurant. The respiratory dis ease, caused by a ‘ ‘coro navirus,” is highly con tagious, affecting birds anywhere from two days to six weeks with high mortality and con demnations. Symptoms include coughing, sneezing, and snicking a variety of respirat ory problems, according to Davison. The University has been performing studies in cooperation with two state broiler flocks that have had problems with respiratory-like symp toms. Mortality for one company ranged from 6.2 percent to 22.9 per cent, with an average of 12.2 percent. Mortality for the other company (located a distance away) was 3.4 percent to 7.9 percent, with an average of 5.54 percent. The cause of the bronchitis is uncertain, since flocks located nearby haven’t been affected. Davison said that many copmpanics are getting hit with mortali-
