Correspondent CHAMBERSBURG (Franklin Co.) —A 4-year-old Holstein that placed fourth in her class last year was named grand champion of the recent Franklin County Dairy Show. Seelby Counselor Ericka is owned by Joshua Eshelman of St Thomas. The 16-year-old has had Ericka since she was a calf. He was very surprised by her win, though he likes the cow a lot. Josh said. “I just took care of her nice and had her looking right,” said Josh. Judge Steven Shaw of Wil liamsburg said Ericka was a “defi nite first” place cow. White said Ericka had great bloom of udder with “good heighth and width of the rear udder.” Josh said Ericka is easy to work with in the ring. “She’s really tame and she has a nice personali ty,” he said. Josh and Ericka also won senior champion, 4-H grand champion, and 4-H senior champion at the county’s annual show. The awards made this Franklin County Fair one of the best ever for Josh. “I’m having a blast,” he said. Josh, the son of Garnet and Wanda Eshelman, is a member of the Western 4-H Dairy Club and the Franklin County FFA. The premier breeder and exhi bitor at the fair was El-Dor Farm of Chambersburg. El-Dor is owned and operated by J. Eldon Crider, his wife Dor othy, and sons Richard and J. Arlan Crider. The family is a perennial win ner of the breeding and exhibiting fl premier breeder and exhibitor for the third consecutive year. Parnell View Farm won the bam dlvlalon of the Good Housekeeping contest They received the Paul D. Eekstlne award, given In memory of the late Eekstlne of Meadow Vu Farm In Mercersburg. From left, Deanna Hartman, Jamie Hartman, Robert Eekstlne, show chairman, Gladys Ecks tine, wife of the late Raul Eckstme, and Rhodsnatakstine, wife of Robert Eekstlne. 4-Year-Old Is Franklin County Champion award at the fair, winning it for the last three consecutive years and also in 1990. Richard Crider said the family does not set a goal to win the awards. “Good cows can come from anywhere,” he said. “I just try to do the best I can and let the awards take care of themselves.” The premier breeder award is more significant to the family. “Because you have to breed the animal and raise it, there’s more of a time commitment involved.” Arlan Crider said. The Criders were not expecting either award going into the fair, “because we felt a lot of our cows were in the wrong stages of lacta tion,” he said. “It’s very gratifying to know that you’ve bred a good group of cows,” Richard Crider said. The brothers started showing cattle more than a decade ago while in 4-H. They had eight ani mals at the county fair. El-Dor is milking about 65 head at present. Eldon, Arlan, and Richard share the fanning respon sibilities. Arlan also works for Pennsylvania DHIA.
