DRY WEATHER DAMAGE
As I write this, we are having
dry weather across most of the
state. Visitors at Ag Progress Days
from many places indicated they
were feeding some hay to then
beef herds. The casualties of dry
weather and a lack of late season
grass are young calves and cows
that are not yet bred back for next
year.
For cows still in breeding pas
tures, this may be one of the few
times that extending the breeding
season may be beneficial. Usually,
extension of the breeding season is
not recommended because- it will
be very hard to try and “back up”
the herd later and younger calves
will also be lighter at weaning and
less valuable per head. This year,
getting the cow pregnant may be of
greater importance because the
indications are the cattle cycle is
beginning to move toward fewer
cows. This would result in higher
calf prices next year. Secondly,
improvement in the genetics from
herd sires next year could return
many herds to their previous sale
weights in a single year. The
calves may indeed be younger than
they were this year, but the greater
genetic potential for growth from
the sires could result in calves that
are just as heavy at weaning.
The weather we experienced for
much of the normal breeding sea
son was very hot with high humidi
ty —just the thing that will reduce
conception. Therefore, extension
of the breeding season may need to
be coupled with some “soft” cull
ing in the cow herd and retention of
more replacement heifers than
usual from this year’s calf crop. In
Exhibitors Parade 115 Entries At Va. Show
Va., exhibited the July 1983
daughter of Premier Independence
KN. The pair was also the champ
ion owned cow with natural calf
and champion cow with natural
calf.
Taking reserve grand champion
cow-calf pair honors was WRA
Sarah 37C and her April 1995
heifer calf. They first won champ
ion bred-and-owned cow with
natural calf before being selected
for the reserve grand honor. The
February 1993 daughter of Rito
9F83 of SHII Fullback is owned
by Whitestone Farm, Aldie, Va.,
and White Ridge Angus, Somer
ville, Va.

Livestock Notes
most cases there will be no lack of
stored feed to winter some “extra”
cattle, and many producers may
need the additional numbers to
meet financial needs later.
If pastures need to be supple
mented, good grass hay is all that
will probably be needed for the
cow herd. This period of the year
for spring-calving cows parti
cularly if they are already pregnant
is a low point in die annual
nutritional needs. After grass hay.
haylage, or balage, com silage
would be the next most useful
feed, with legume hay and silages
being the least cost-effective feed.
Byproduct feeds such as chips and
apple pomace can also be very
effective as long as transportation
and feeding costs are small
enough.
For the calves, creep feeding
would be effective since there was
a good small grain crop in most
local areas. A good feed can be for
mulated from most of these grains
particularly oats and barley
that can help put some sale weight
on the calves.
Early weaning may also be an
alternative. Some recent studies
have shown calves fed right after
early weaning can have equal
weaning performance as calves
that stay with the cow even in good
grazing conditions. Some supple
mental feed will be needed, so
some manner of delivery of grain
rations is needed. Weaning,
coupled with a good vaccination
program, can also be used to
enhance marketability of feeder
calves.
The best thing to do will be to
watch it rain.

Feeder Calf Roundup
Plans are complete for the first
Pennsylvania Feeder Calf Round
up for this fall. This is a joint effort
of the Penn State Extension, the
Pennsylvania Cattleman’s Associ
ation, and several animal health
organizations.
The outline of the program is
that calves will be vaccinated,
wormed, implanted, and tagged in
early September, about three
weeks later boosters will be admi
nistered, calves will be shipped to
a central weaning facility the fust
week of October, and they will be
sold in sorted, uniform outcome
groups on or about OcL 20. The
cost of drugs and tags is $5 per calf,
and the cost of the weaning period
will be feed plus $.30 per head dai
ly. The facility is the Long Feedlot
at New Stanton. In most programs
like this conducted around the
country, the calves easily pay for
the weaning costs in extra sale
weight
There is still time to get
involved in this program if you
want to take advantage of this
marketing opportunity. Contact
me at (814) 863-3661 if you are
interested or if I can answer your
questions.
