E-town Sheep Show Selects Sale Lamb As Supreme Champion
LOU ANN GOOD
.Lancaster Farming Staff
ELIZABETHTOWN (Uncas
ter Co.) —i• Unlike last year, Bran
don Zeigler wasn’t being fitted for
a leg cast during the E-town Sheep
Show. He didn’t need to have
someone else to show his sheep.
But just like last year Ids
sheep was proclaimed the grand
champion selling lamb—with one
big difference. This year his selling
lamb topped champions in the
market and breed competitions to
become the supreme champion
over 248 entries.
The 12-year-old was all smiles.
And, his 10-year-old brother Cor
by who showed the reserve champ
ion market lamb was just as happy.
“We help each other,’’ Brandon
said of the six sheep the brothers
raise on their neighboring Lititz
farm.
The brothers purchased the
lambs in Indiana when their dad
Dean took a trip with Lloyd Reiff
whose daughter Lisa is a consistent
winner in sheep competition.
“Lisa is our coach,” Brandon
said.
Lisa showed the champion
market sheep, a heavyweight, with
Corby playing the stiffest competi
tion with a middleweight that was
named reserve.
Except for last year when Lisa
was on a trip and couldn’t compete
at E-town, she or her brother Lyn
don have taken the champion
market sheep title since 1990.
Michael Musser showed the
reserve grand champion selling
sheep. It was only the second year
in sheep competition for 12-year
old Michael. He expressed shock
that his Suffolk named Sanka
placed so well. “She was jumpy
and nervous and wouldn’t stand
still so I didn’t think she was still

enough for the judge to see how
well finished she was,” Michael.
He is the son of Ken and Linda
Musser of Mt. Joy.
Judge Henry Zerbe of Beaver
town has plenty of practice with
spotting a good sheep. Not only
does he raise sheep, but he makes
his rounds in judging.
“Every show has an unique per
sonality. This is a good show with a
lot of top quality lambs,” he said.
Showing grand champions in
breeding sheep competition was
Keith Bollinger with both champ
ion (ewe lamb) and reserve (year
ling ewe) in the Cheviot breed. In
the Dorset breed, Ann Leed
showed a yearling ewe that was
named champion and Jennifer
Wenger showed a aged ewe named
the reserve. In Hampshire competi
tion, Ann Leed again led with a
yearling ewe and Regina Undis
showed a ram lamb for the reserve.
In the Shropshire class, Amy Bol
linger had both champion and
reserve with her yearling ewe and
ewe lamb. Southdown competition
ended with Jennifer Zimmerman’s
aged ewe at the top and Stephania
Kauffman’s spring lamb as the
reserve. Suffolk competition ended
with Keith Bollinger showing a
yearling ewe as the champion and
his brother Jeny’s ewe lamb as the
reserve. John Schmidt showed the
top Montadale; Amy Haines, the
Columbia, and Katie Grosh, a
Tunis.
Showmanship was divided into
four age groups. Jennifer Wenger
led in the 16 and over competition,
Regina Landis in the 13-1 S year
old section; Radell Peters in the
10-12 year old division; and Katye
Allen in the 9 and under division.
Jennifer Wenger, the 19-year
old daughter of William Wenger
Brandon Zeigler, left, holds his grand champion sailing lamb, which is also
suprsme champion over all champion sheep. Michael Musser holds the middleweight
chr n selling lamb that is also the reserve champion selling lamb.
Lisa Reiff takes the champion market lamb trophy with her heavyweight while Cor
by Zeigler holds the reserve champion market lamb at the E-town Fair.
