day night at the Elizasbethtown

Jessica showed a 1,305-pound
Angus/Maine Angou crossbred
steer she named “Willy* to win the
competition. The steer Erst won its

Jason showed a purebred Shor

was just able jo show the steer

He was to have left for Messiah
College in Grantham on Thursday.
Judge of the 11-head show was
Kevin Diehl, of Fairfield (Pa.),
who said that he had just finished
observing a steer show that was
perhaps 10 times as large. ‘The
quality of animals brought before
me today is just as good,” he told
the young exhibitors.
Diehl farms 300 acres and has a
73-head cow/calf beef operation in
addition to a general farming oper
ation. He said he also shows steer
and does some judging.
He praised the youth on their
accomplishments in raising the
animals, and in showing them.
For the Sloltzfus siblings, it was
the first grand and reserve grand
championship they won with steer.
At their parents farm, which is
primarily a swine operation, the
children have raised show hogs
and sheep and just started showing
steer.
Jessica showed the supreme
champion at her 4-H roundup last
year, while Jason showed the
reserve champion market lamb at
this year’s 4-H roundup, three
weeks ago.
There are actually two different
competitions held at the local fair.
The one that the Stoltzfuses won
was for market animals that were
to be sold Thursday night The
other was for animals that weren’t
to be sold.
