Miller Wins Supreme
Champion Ewe
KUTZTOWN (Berks Co.)
“This animal could withstand a
great deal of competition, take it
to a national show and it will stand
at the top,” said breeding sheep
judge Henry Zerby as he declared
the Southdown Ewe owned by
Amanda Miller of Mertztown the
supreme champion ewe.
There were nine breeds shown
and 118 animals entered. The
champion ewes were as follows:

tlestown captured man/ of the
most coveted awards during the
South Central Pennsylvania
Championship show held at the
Shippensburg Fairgrounds.
The Woods took home not only
the premier breeder and the pre
mier exhibitors honors, but also
the best animal bred and owned by
an exhibitor award for the Hols
tein show with their junior 3-year
old Penn Gate Markem Angel.
Then with that same animal the
Woods took the grand champion
and senior champion spots for the
show.

breed.
Following up on its announced
goal of doubling the genetic gain
annually, over its present pace,
they approved development of
production and type evaluation
programs the basis for all genetic
progress. Liberal recognition of
the herds achieving these genetic
goals will be the cornerstone
along with its approval to proceed
with the development of programs
to improve type evaluations.

Convention
The members heard reports
from their officers and committee
chairman including that for the
second year registration were up
and the association had a slight
gain overall financially. It was an
nounced that the conversion of the
registry and accounting functions
to a state of the art data processing
system developed in Australia will
be completed this fall.
Visitors from Germany who
have been purchasing embryos
from the Ayrshire breed confirm
ed a growing interest in the
breed’s hardiness and ability to
compete profitably.
Duriong the annual meeting,
members, in breakout groups, dis
cussed further ways to enhance
the breed genetically, adopted se
veral bylaw changes and elected
officers and directors for the next
year.
James McConnell of Ohio was
re-elected president and Dale
Schilling of Indiana a first term
director. Others re-elected to the
board woe Linda Hanson of Min
nesota, Bruce Nelson of Wiscon
sin and David Patrick from Mary
land and second vice president.
John Rodgers of Pennsylvania
was re-elected first vice president.
During the course of events.
Wisconsin breeders hosted mem
bers to their farms, socialized over
generous portions of food, held a
stato officers meeting and leader
ship seminar.
The convention concluded with
an auction of animals for an aver
age of $1,526.
