purchased in 1936 by Sam’s
grandfather, Alfred Sr. At the time
of purchase, the initial farm was
actually several different farms.
Over the years the farm has grown
with additional land purchases, as
well as the construction of three
silos and a machinery shed and the
rebuilding of both the house and
the bam. The second farm, pur
chased by Sam in 1987, consists
of 76 acres and houses a heifer
bam.
The primary bam, constructed
in 1947 and 1948, measures 38’
wide by 96’ long and stanchions
3S Jersey and 10 Holstein milkers.
Three buildings contributed ma
terials to the barn’s construction,
with the two main support beams
coming from the grist mill in near-
contest.

down, was also salvaged and used.
In the fall of 1948, the milkhouse
was added.
Two wooden silos were built
for storing com silage. The first
one, constructed in 1948 using
wood from the farm, measures 14’
by 30’. The second silo, measur
ing 14’ by 32’ was built in 1949.
In 1988 a 14’ x 50’ Harvestore silo
was added for high moisture shell
ed com. The 40’ by 7-2’ machinery
shed was also erected in 1988.

mately 200 acres of mixed hay and
purchase all the high moisture
com.
