Brubaker Farms
By listening to the expert opinions of Industry and exten
sion, Brubaker Farms has Improved farm profitability through
diversification, according to Tony Brubaker. Tony farms with
his parents Luke and Barbara and Tony’s brother Mike, who
helps in the operation with wife Lisa and daughter Molly,
1V» years and Joshua, 1 month. Relying on the advice of a vari
ety of Industry and support services, Brubaker Farms Dairy of
Distinction, located In Mount Joy, Lancaster County, has been
expanding to the point where it milks about 375 grade Holstein
using a double-10 parallel parlor. In addition, the Brubakers
care for about 300 young stock. The latest rolling herd average
was 21,900 pounds. The farm, on a TMR program, Includes
about 800 tillable acres, Including SO in wheat, 600 In corn, 50
In soybeans, 20 In rye (double-cropped), 20 In alfalfa, and 50
acres in peas.

* The Lazy-Dalsy Farm, located east of East Salem, has
been known for red and white Holstelns for a long time.
Mary Frymoyer and her late husband, who died in 1989, had
the most red and white Holstelns In the county. Now the
farm Is operated by Kenneth Smith, who also has some red
and whites that carry the Lazy-Dazy prefix. The farm con
sists of 100 acres, and the herd of 34 milk cows Includes
those that milk over 100 pounds per day. They are housed In
a tlestall bam, and they graze the cows in summer but also
green chop Sudan grass and take It to the cows. The farm
has been In the family since 1910. To be successful, Mary
says you need to watch the small things and do your own
work.
