Linda Moose, owner of Cha pel-Ridge Farm, will serve as pre sident of the North East Santa Gertrudis Association (NESGA) for the 1995-1996 year. Moose was elected at the May meeting of the NESGA at Moss’s Restaurant Other officers elected are Jim Delaplaine,'Gettysburg, vice pre sident; Susan M. White, Gettys burg, secretary-treasurer; Mar guerite L. Bucher, Gettysburg, publicity chair; and James Quan beck, Columbia; John and Mar garet Marshall of Rochester Mills; and Gene Moosfc, Annette Dela plaine and Douglas White, all of Gettysburg, directors. The organization will hold a Field Day on July 29 on Tejas Farm, Rochester Mills. Tejas Farm is owned by the Marshalls, who are using a Santa Gertrudis bull as a herd sire in their commer cial cattle operation. The event will feature the progeny of the Santa crosses produced at the Te jas operation. Purebred cattle from major breeders will also be on ex hibit. The field day held at the Moose farm in the summer of 1994 was termed very successful by Linda Moose. The clearance granted, a temporary tolerance exemption, extends to all 500 plots in cooperating farmers’ fields and Northrup King research locations that are participating in advanced Bt com Held trials across the U.S. this year. “We have been actively evaluating the field performance of Bt com for three years,” said Kent Schulze, president/CEO of Northrup King. “The extensive research trials now underway, coupled with clearance to harvest Bt com just like a conventional experi mental hybrid, are encouraging steps in our efforts to bring Bt com to fanners.” Bt com was deve loped through biotech nology to resist the European com borer. The plants contain a gene from Bacillus thuringiensis, common ly known at Bt, a natur ally occuring soil bac terium. Other projects discussed were participation in the Virginia Expo 1996, which is always held on the third weekend of April. The Mooses attended the event this year and stated that the animals were on exhibit at private treaty. It was agreed that participation might expose the breed to Virginia people.
