day, August 10. from 8 a.m. to
1:30 p.m. at the Western Mary
land Research and Education Cen
ter (WMREC).
Wagon tours of Agricultural
Experiment Station research plots
and Cooperative Extension Ser
vice demonstrations will depart
from 8 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Ste
ven M. Bogash, faculty extension
assistant and enterprise consul
tant, will talk about gooseberries,
elderberries, and currants.
Other featured topics are as fol
lows: phosphorus-loading capaci
ty of Maryland soils, high
population planting of com, com
and soybean weed control in west
ern Maryland, insect resistant
plants, reintroduction and man
agement for natural control of the
cereal leaf beetle, blueberry grow
ing, management of young forests,
and the Washington County Ag
Expo.
Throughout the day there will
be farm tillage and planting equip
ment demonstrations and displays
examining the latest agricultural
equipment, farm services, and
University of Maryland at College
Park’s agricultural programs.
Field day participants can browse
through Held plots of com and
soybean varieties and check out
the new weed controls in com.

a.m. The theme is food and'
includes “Meals in Minutes,”
“Eating on the Run,” “Food Safe
ty," “A Closer Look at Foods” and
“Bread—The Staff of Life.”
“You’re Not Getting Enough
Grains,” presented by Kaye B.
Derr, Frederick County faculty
extension assistant, will present
variations on how to prepare the
recommended 6 to 11 servings of
grains a day. She will introduce
grain dishes such as couscous—
new to U.S. palates. Cassandra S.
Cotridon, Frederick County home
economics extension agent, will
present “Seafood for Family
Meals.” Seafood safety, handling,
and delivery will be addressed. A
few presentations will feature
food tasting.
A hog roast will round out the
day. For $4, participants can enjoy
a lunch featuring Maryland pork.

lunch. Registration forms must be
received by August 2, or call

way 65 (Sharpsburg Pike) near
Hagerstown. Proceed south for 7
