Ice cream itself probably derives from the flavored “water ice” of 17th-century Italy. English colonists brought the sweet, frozen delicacy to America, where early settler made ice cream in pewter bowls set in ice and salt. The hand-cranked freezer was invented around 1846. Jacob Fussel took the « process a step further, opening the first com mercial ice-cream factory in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1851. The ice-cream soda ckme along in 1879, and then the ice-cream :one showed up at the World’s Fair in St. xiuis, Missouri, in 1904. Americans lead the orld in their consumption of ice cream, with ustralia and Canada close behind. * A smiling face is half the meal. ■3- Fenntl 1$ contidorod a dlatary aid in many old harbala.
