AB-Lanc«ster -Farming, Saturday, July 8, 1995 sr'LOL.D " tJ w * —— 2^ St. Swithin’s Day An English feast day, St. Swithm's Day on July 15 is regarded in weatherlore as a predictor of rain. St. Swithm was an Anglo-Saxon cleric who became the Bishop of Winchester He died circa a.d. 862 and it was his wish to be buried outside the church, rather than inside, so that the "sweet ram of heaven” would fall on his grave When he was canonized, centuries later, church authorities evidently saw fit to bring his remains indoors. On doing so. it is told, a torrential ram began that lasted 4(1 days St. Swithln s day, if that dost rain, For 40 days i will remain; St. Swithin day, if th ou he fair, For 40 days twill rain na mair [no more] ■rs- Salt sprinkled on the skillet before frying fish will pre vent sticking.
