Ky.—Self-examination, unifica
tion, education, and enforcement
will be the focus for the first
National Youth Livestock Prog
ram Ethics Symposium to be held
December 1-2 in Las Vegas, Nev.
Following the recent disclosure
of cases of unethical and illegal
activity associated with youth
livestock programs across the
United States, the symposium is a
cooperative effort among several
agriculture entities to bring
national action to the issue.
The Livestock Conservation
Institute (LCI) will serve as the
facilitating organization for the
event which is expected to draw
an attendance of several hundred
people. The mission of the sympo
sium is to provide a forum for
individuals and organizations

initiatives and enforcement codes
to reduce or eliminate the inci
dences of unethical and illegal
activities related to youth lives
tock events.
“While the vast majority of
exhibitors at youth and open lives
tock expositions are responsible
stewards of livestock, the actions
of an unethical few individuals
could very well endanger the
future existence of 4-H and FFA
sponsored livestock programs,”
said Dr. Jeff Goodwin, Texas
Agricultural Extension Service,
who is chair of the Symposium
Planning Committee.

offical of the Livestock Conserva
tion Institute, the Symposium
Planning Committee consists of
representatives from many seg
ments of animal agricultural
including the American Veterin
ary Medical Association, the
National FFA Organization, the
Animal Industry Foundation, the
American Farm Bureau Federa
tion, and the United States Depart
ment of Agriculture.
