Raise a Toast
On July 4, whether with a glass of spring water or
something stronger, we raise our glasses and drink
to the health of our nation. Oddly, the custom of
drinking one's health may have come from the frequent
violence associated with drinking. (The ancient Greeks
used poisoned wine for political gam, but a host who
wanted to reassure his guests would pour from a com
mon decanter and take the first sip, literally, to his
guests continued health.) In modern times, Americans
have made grand speeches in honor of Uncle Sam, Old
Glory, or the Star-Spangled Banner. One common toast
was, “To the Stars and Stripes, each of them
representing a state, each a diamond in a necklace of
:ems" The term “toasting" took its
lame from the ancient Roman custom
if dropping a burned piece of toast
into a cup of wine The charred bread
reduced the acidity, rendering an
inferior, vinegary wine into a more
palatable drink
ten die wine is in, the wit is out.
py To help your body beat the heat, drink plenty of fluida
and minimize your Intake of protein-rich fooda.
