Pollination Critical
For Best Yield
GOLDEN VALLEY. Minn. Pollination is
the single most critical time during the com life
cycle, said Tom Miller, Northrup King Co. agro
nomist in Illinois. During the two weeks before
and two weeks following pollination, com is
very sensitive to drought or heat stress. Either of
these stresses can cause significant yield losses.
In normal years. Miller said that in Illinois, for
example, this yield-determining period occurs
during late June or early July. However, he
explains that this season’s wet, cool weather and
subsequently delayed planting will push pollina
tion in many areas into August, traditionally the
hottest, driest month of the growing season.
According to Miller, moisture, heat and other
environmental stresses during tasseling can
result in dramatic yield reductions. For example,
although each tassel produces and sheds several
million pollen grains, prolonged heat stress can
reduce pollen viability. Similarly, severe mois
ture stress will delay silk emergence. If develop
ment is delayed long enough, die silks may miss
pollination altogether.
Poor pollination causes reduced kernel set.
and in extreme cases, barren ears. To limit polli
nation risk, the Northrup King agronomist points
to the importance of planting hybrids with diffe
rent maturities. This spreads the pollinating per
iod so that a relatively short period of heat stress
will not affect the pollination of the entire crop.
