thickness at the face should be 3/8
to 5/8 inch.
d. Dry ice *— plan on using 1/2
pound per head branded. Liquid
nitrogen can be used but a solution
of alcohol and dry ice is usually
easier to handle and less
expensive.
e. Alcohol use only 90 per
cent pure or higher alcohol. Either
ethyl, methyl, or isopropylalcohol
may be used. The cheapest source
is generally denatured alcohol sold
at paint stores as shellac thinner.
Three to five gallons is generally
needed but it can be saved and used
time after time.
f. Insulated containers for cool
ing all nine irons at the same time
arc required. Inexpensive styro
foam picnic coolers work well.

a. Prepare solution of dry ice
and alcohol. The proportions of
dry ice and aicohoi are not impor
tant. The irons should be covered
with alcohol cooled with a chunk
of dry ice.
b. Place irons in the cooling sol
ution. When the bubbling over the
irons has almost completely
ceased, the irons are cold enough.
After an iron has been used, it is
ready for re-use when the bubbling
over it is equivalent to that in the
rest of the container.
c. Prepare the area to be
branded. The brand can either be
placed on the rib or on the rump.
Results are usually more satisfying
when the rump is used. Clip the
area as closely as possible and
cleanse with uncooled alcohol.
d. Apply the branding iron. With
firm and even pressure, apply the

iron on the prepared area for the
correct amount of time. Under
branding (too little time) produces
no results. Over-branding (too
much time) removes hair similar to
a hot brand. The proper time
depends on the age of the animal,
thickness of the hide, how close
the hair has been clipped, and the
coolant used. If dry ice and alcohol
are used, the time should be about
40 seconds for calves with mod
erately thick hides when the hair
has been clipped with extra thin
blades. Add five to 10 seconds to
the branding time for each of the
following factors: older calves,
thick hide, or hair that was clipped
with ordinary clippers. To dehair
white animals, the time required is
60 to 70 seconds. If liquid nitrogen
is used, the time should be about
45 seconds. Add five seconds for
each of the other factors. About
60-75 seconds are needed to dehair

white animals using liquid
nitrogen.
e. Results to expect The
super-cooled iron freezes the hide.
In a few minutes thawing will
occur and the new' brand will col
lect fluid and a swelling and red
dening of the skin will be observ
able. In a few days, the hair on the
brand will shed. When the new
hair comes in, it will be white. The
white hair will be complete in
about three months, depending on
the time of year.
• Hot iron branding This
method is satisfactory and practi
cal because numbers are perma
nent and, once healed, there is no
further danger of injury. Branding
is a one-shot proposition that pro
duces a bum on the hide in the
shape of the iron. As the bum
heals, scar tissue is formed, result
ing in a permanent, hair-free out
line of the number.

Equipment needed includes:
a. A complete set (0-9) of irons
made of material 1/4-inch to
3/8-inch thick and 6 inches high.
b. Branding iron heater (wood is
best fuel).
c. A substantial squeeze chute
for firm restraint of the animal.
Branding procedure:
a. Brands may be put on the
rump or high on the rib area just
behind the shoulders.
b. Only yearlings and cows
should be branded. Wet or damp
animals cannot be successfully
branded.
c. On cattle with heavy winter
coats, the hair should be clipped
from the area to be branded.
d. The iron should be hot but not
red hot When properly heated, the
iron is ash gray in color.
e. Hold the hot brand to the skin
until the branded area is a rich
buckskin color (3-S seconds).
