Dry ice *— plan on using 1/2 pound per head branded. Liquid nitrogen can be used but a solution of alcohol and dry ice is usually easier to handle and less expensive. e. Alcohol use only 90 per cent pure or higher alcohol. Either ethyl, methyl, or isopropylalcohol may be used. The cheapest source is generally denatured alcohol sold at paint stores as shellac thinner. Three to five gallons is generally needed but it can be saved and used time after time. f. Insulated containers for cool ing all nine irons at the same time arc required. Prepare solution of dry ice and alcohol. The proportions of dry ice and aicohoi are not impor tant. The irons should be covered with alcohol cooled with a chunk of dry ice. b. Place irons in the cooling sol ution. When the bubbling over the irons has almost completely ceased, the irons are cold enough. After an iron has been used, it is ready for re-use when the bubbling over it is equivalent to that in the rest of the container. c. Prepare the area to be branded. The brand can either be placed on the rib or on the rump. Results are usually more satisfying when the rump is used. Clip the area as closely as possible and cleanse with uncooled alcohol. d. Under branding (too little time) produces no results. Over-branding (too much time) removes hair similar to a hot brand. The proper time depends on the age of the animal, thickness of the hide, how close the hair has been clipped, and the coolant used. If dry ice and alcohol are used, the time should be about 40 seconds for calves with mod erately thick hides when the hair has been clipped with extra thin blades. Add five to 10 seconds to the branding time for each of the following factors: older calves, thick hide, or hair that was clipped with ordinary clippers. To dehair white animals, the time required is 60 to 70 seconds. If liquid nitrogen is used, the time should be about 45 seconds. Add five seconds for each of the other factors. About 60-75 seconds are needed to dehair Cows By Breed For May mm 37069 133 21480 40 41682 DMA 39337 SLASH " 37251 BRIDGE/ 33902 137 34067 685 38828 CHICK 35969 SILKY 36552 lIISO 37270 ABBY 42133 OHBSA 37472 OHA 37638 AGHES 40835 BOOTY 34809 JERSEY 3.3 1218 4.0 1498 5.6 1209 6.7 1445 2.9 1206 3.4 1431 3.0 1193 3.1 1219 3.2 1192 3.6 1337 3.5 1191 4.0 1344 3.5 1185 4.1 1398 3.1 1185 3.7 1437 3.3 1184 3.4 1206 3.2 1183 3.0 1095 3.2 1181 3.2 1209 2.8 1179 3.6 1513 3.1 1178 2.9 1100 3.1 1177 3.1 1173 2.9 1176 3.7 1526 3.4 1171 3.2 1110 28029 3.4 960 24314 3.8 919 24811 3.6 885 19324 4.5 877 23452 3.7 862 25127 3.4 844 21611 3.9 838 22643 3.6 826 23118 3.6 824 23648 3.5 820 22852 3.6 816 21982 3.7 813 23802 3.4 808 21796 3.7 802 21336 3.7 800 21262 3.8 799 22611 3.5 798 21572 3.7 798 21396 3.7 796 22607 3.5 792 21786 3.6 782 21288 3.7 780 19519 4.0 777 19444 4.0 777 20396 3.8 773 6AKBI 669 99 40H 739 K JAR JERRY 486 All DARIELE HILLY PEANDI 752 K HOPE HOLLY 800 800 678 BABE 684 JEWEL SADIEI6 705 BRITNEY 34 K 331 3.4 1041 2.7 825 3.2 1019 3.1 985 3.7 1000 4.5 1207 3.5 904 3.8 994 3.3 895 3.9 1072 3.4 871 3.1 796 3.5 865 3.7 916 3.6 860 4.1 985 3.2 860 2.5 666 3.3 858 4.0 1033 3.5 851 3.5 866 3.5 850 3.7 911 3.7 845 4.1 927 3.5 844 3.4 818 3.5 835 4.5 1088 3.4 834 3.7 905 3.4 830 3.7 902 3.2 830 3.2 809 3.5 827 4.4 1022 3.0 821 3.3 893 3.3 817 3.9 953 3.3 810 3.9 951 3.6 810 3.8 876 27522 25964 RITA ARBER 24882 24192 MAE LORI 26679 26095 24442 24332 EITOSHA STELLA ‘JAKE ODESS 22789 24178 24089 ESTHER ALAKHA BEAD 24197 24364 1301 31 25603 23383 27094 24647 24250 22815 BELL HOOLA DILLIE ELECTRA SHELLY REDA JL Hi F REMEDY XERDRA 22104 3.6 802 4.2 919 BRDCE 8 BEILIRGER ROSETTA 24303 3.3 802 3.4 823 PAINTER LAHD FASM MICHAEL ZOLOCSIK PAHTER LAND FARM BORIZOR FARM BOX 409 PAINTER LAND FASH ARVID KATHY KOBOSKY PAIMER LARD FARM BIDDER ACRES FARR BIDDER ACRES FARR BORIZOR FARR BOX 409 MICHAEL ZOLOCSIK HORIZON FARR BOX 409 NANCY NEIL MARY PAYEE PAINTER LAND FARM HORIZON FARM BOX 409 BARROP FARM DONALD E fHVELL HARROP FARM ARVID KATHY KOBOSKY NARY PAYNE BIDDER ACRES FABK SURE + GARY CROW. Results to expect The super-cooled iron freezes the hide. In a few minutes thawing will occur and the new' brand will col lect fluid and a swelling and red dening of the skin will be observ able. In a few days, the hair on the brand will shed. When the new hair comes in, it will be white. The white hair will be complete in about three months, depending on the time of year. • Hot iron branding This method is satisfactory and practi cal because numbers are perma nent and, once healed, there is no further danger of injury. Branding is a one-shot proposition that pro duces a bum on the hide in the shape of the iron. As the bum heals, scar tissue is formed, result ing in a permanent, hair-free out line of the number.
