Melissa Beckef considers herself “lucky enough to pick the right pig” at a sale held this year by Frank Fccscr. Selecting the right genetics gar nered her a supreme champion tro phy at the 33rd annual Lancaster County FFA Hog Show at the Manheim Farm Show grounds on Tuesday. This is the first supreme market FFA champion for Melissa, 17, daughter of Nancy and Marlin Becker, Manheiip. The Manheim FFA’er showed her 256-pound Hamp/Duroc gilt cross from the heavyweight division. Melissa said she knew it was a good pig, but was surprised when it garnered her a supreme champ ion trophy. Melissa, who brought a total of six hogs to the FFA show, plans to show at the Manheim and the state farm shows. Shannon Horst, 17. son of Harvey and Marlene Horst, Nar von, showed his 238-pound medium weight champion hog, a York cross gilt, to reserve champ ionship. The Grassland FFA mem ber and state FFA chaplain brought two hogs to the contest. He said he’ll be showing at several county fairs and the Farm Show. “We had some quality breed ing,” said Shannon. “It really helps out a lot” He said they obtained good genetics using their own gilts and purchased commer cial semen, “some really good stuff,” he said, to obtain a champ ion hog. At the evening sale, Hatfield Quality Meats, represented by Kenton Good, purchased Melis sa’s supreme market champion for SZ3S a pound, for a total of $601.60. Kurds Good, representing Hat field, purchased Shannon’s reserve champion for $2.20 a pound, for a total of $523.60. Champion junior showman award went to Mike O’Handly, Penn Manor FFA. Mike, 16. is the son of Mark and Marlene O’Handly, Pequea. Champion senior showman went to Jay Hess, Penn Manor FFA. Jay, 20. is the son of Abe and Janie Hess, Conestoga. At the sale, there were a total of 10 registered buyers for the sale. Seven purchasers paid an average of 76 cents a pound with champ ions; without, 68 cents a pound. Judge for the show was Greg Musser. There were a total of 40 hogs and 12 exhibitors. Following is a list of show placings.
