Several members of the Progres
sive Agriculture Organization (Pro
Ag) spent time in Washington
recently, lobbying' for the Dairy,
Nutrition, and Conservation Act of
1995 (DNCA).
According to Arden Tewks
bury, manager of Pro Ag, different
teams from the group spent time
with officials of Pennsylvania and
New York state representatives
and senators, explaining the Dairy
Act. In addition, aides from 20
other legislator offices were
visited.

man of the House Subcommittee

Speaking from Meshoppen,
Tewskbury said, “Milk prices paid
to area dairy farmers now have
plummeted below the 1981 level
and will probably go below the
1980 price this summer.” It’s
unthinkable, he said, to ask dairy
farmers to continue their dairy
operations in this type of economic
climate.
The group urged all members of
Congress to give serious consider
ation of the DNCA as a viable
method of resolving the financial
plight facing dairy farmers.
The DNCA was finalized during
the past winter through the efforts
of Congressman Bemie Sanders of
Vermont, along with the National
Family Farm Coalition and Pro
Ag.
The proposed Act will price
milk to dairy farmers based on the
national avenge cost of produc
tion, will allow dairy fanners to
produce milk in line with the
domestic market, will provide
milk products for the Dairy Nutri
tional Program,; will further reduce
the already low cost dairy prog
rams in the USDA, and will allow
dairy farmers to comply with man
dated conservation programs.
The Pro Ag members informed
everyone they met with, that the
amount of dairy products in USDA
storage is near an all-time low.
Actually, according to offleals of
Pro Ag. there has been no extra
cheese in the United States for
three successive years.

dairy policy by the end of June.
Dennis Boyanowksi, president
of Pro Ag, stated that the organiza
tion will accelerate its efforts dur
ing the next 30 days in an attempt
to have the DNCA considered by
Congress.
Pro Ag officials believe it’s
important for consumers to realize
the seriousness of the dairy far
mers’ plight, and if the consumers
want to be sure of a local supply of
a fresh wholesome milk, then they
must get behind the efforts of the
local dairy farmers.
