Pesticides Must Be
Stored With Caution
UNIVERSITY PARK (Centre
Co.) —Although home gardeners
are not likely to keep large quanti
ties of pesticides, even small
amounts should be stored with
care, said a safety expert in Penn
State’s College of Agricultural
Sciences.
“Some pesticides can cause
severe illness and even death if
misused,” said Sam Steel, senior
research teclmologist in agricul
tural and biological engineering.
“Even the less toxic formulations
ordinarily used in home garden
pesticides must be stored carefully
to limit exposure and keep them
out of reach of children.”
One common storage mistake is
keeping liquid pesticides in
unheated sheds or garages, where
freezing reduces their effective
ness. Another is storing pesticides
too close to human or animal
foodstuffs, needlessly risking con
tamination. Storing pesticides too
near human living quarters can
expose people and pets to
unhealthy residues.
“Storing pesticides in unlabeled
containers also can have serious
consequences,” Steel said. “Oral
ingestion is the most common
type of fatal pesticide poisoning,
and the victims usually are child
ren younger than five years old.
That’s why pesticides never
should be stored in containers
such as soda botdes or juice jugs.
Pesticides should be kept in a
locked storage facility in their
original containers.”

heated areas, but not at tempera
tures greater than 95 degrees F.

children, preferably in locked
cabinets or rooms.
•Keep flammable or explosive
pesticides away from ignition
sources such as hot water heaters,
welders,, or gas grills.
•Never store pesticides near
human or pet foodstuffs.
•Never store pesticides in damp
areas which could degrade the
product and its container.
•Use older products first. Prop
erly discard outdated or unlabeled
products.
•Wrap outdared products in
multiple layers of newspaper and
keep in a sealed container for dis
posal. Check with local authorities
on disposal requirements.
•Notify emergency personnel of
potentially dangerous products in
the event of a fire or accident in
your home.

storage practices, you can make
your home and neighborhood a
healthier and safer place for
everyone,” Steel said.
