AS-Lancaster Farming! Saturday, June 10, 1995 A Burn the Flag? In flag etiquette, the proper disposal of a tattered flag is to bum it with dignity. Flag Day, celebrating the adoption of the Stars and Stripes by the Continental Congress in 1777, falls on June 14th, as decreed by Congress in 1949. Other rules of flag etiquette state that a flag should be hoisted briskly, lowered ceremonious ly, and generally flown only from sunrise to sunset. In special circumstances, when the flag is flown at night, it should be well lit. Improper uses include any desecra tion, public burning, or mutilation of the flag. It should not be allowed to touch the ground or dipped to any person or thing, except, customarily, when a ship % salutes by dipping its colors. “Hats off!
