with an introduction to agriculture
and environmental science. If they
choose, 10th graders leant more
about plant science. In 11th grade,
students can leant about either ani
mal science or greenhouse manag
ment. Through a vocational prog
ram in 12th grade, students can
sign up to begin an ag-related
career.
Many of the 80 students who
sign up also become Bermudian
FFA members and have a chance
to experience how important agri
culture is for many industries.
“FFA ( members visit area
farms, prepare for contests, attend
livestock expositions, judging
contests. Farm Show, and many go
on to the national convention in
Kansas City,” said Wardle. “We
let them see how big ag is.”
Like many schools, the ag sci
ence program also includes a small
greenhouse from which different
types of flowers and bedding
plants are grown. In addition,
Wardle operates his own landscap
ing company from which students
can obtain practical experience.
Three years ago, with die help of
other instructors at the school,
Wardle was able to assemble sev
eral environmental awareness
areas. The areas, encompassing
about 20 acres near the school,
provide some aspects of agricul
ture. all within “five minutes of
the classroom,” said Wardle.

Field Day June 24
BREEZEWOOD (Bedford
Co.) —The Bedford County Gra
ziers Group will hold a Held day
on Saturday, June 24, at 1 p.m.
Troy and Linda Helman will
host the group. Their farm is
located in southern Bedford Coun
ty, approximately seven miles
south of Bedford on Rt 220 south.

The Helman farm is a seasonal
grass-based dairy operation with
approximately 100 head of Jersey
cattle. They plan on having a herd
of 150 within five years.
The farm tour will include the
water system, grazing paddocks,

wedands, farmer Helds, grass
lands, a streambed, and other
areas.
In the past month, Wardle and
other instructors provided lessons
to 20 teachers Horn the district
elementary, middle, and high
schools about the environmental
areas. Two sessions examined how
to apply the information for spe
cialized instruction from kinder
garten through 12th grade.
The past week, Wardle noticed
several student groups touring
through the wedands area. “I see
lots and lots of kids out there at
every grade level and experi
ence,” he said.
The program will try to expose
as “many kids as we can,” Wardle
said, to learning about agriculture
and the environment
Wardle has been accepted to
attend the 1995 National Institute
on Cooperative Education (NICE)
to be held in July in Minneapolis,
Minn. A native of Cumberland
County, Wardle is a 1982 gra
duage of Big Springs High School.
He majored in agricultural educa
tion and minored in extension edu
cation at Penn State, from which
he was graduated in 1986. In the
fall of 1986, Wardle began teach
ing at Bermudian Springs.
